Are you, Are you
Coming to the tree
Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me.
Strange things did happen here,
No stranger would it be,

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.
At first, I thought this song was in reference to Katniss and Gale. And then the second time I read the book, I realized it’s about Peeta. They put the necklace of rope on themselves when they threatened to take the berries. Katniss and Peeta made that choice, together; and they chose to swing side by side, together. (Obviously, I could make a million Katniss and Peeta references here.)  Neither one of them finds it unusual that they would die for one another. The Arena in the Third Quarter Quell is a clock, and Katniss and Peeta are separated at midnight. I know The Hanging Tree is about Everlark, because Peeta remembers Mr. Everdeen singing it— Gale doesn’t remember it at all.
Anyway, just the random musings of a crazy corgi lady. Keep calm and carry on.

The knots that they tie in that piece of rope can also be seen as an allusion to the song, tying knots in a hangman’s noose. Plus, the song references a man murdering three, and three is the amount of people Peeta killed in the arenas.
